Hunter/Trapper Education Classes

Pennsylvania now offers two ways to obtain the certification you need to purchase a hunting license.  There are the traditional courses that have been taught at LPRGC for many years.  There are also full independent study courses, that can be completed totally on-line.

TRADITIONAL HTE COURSES TAUGHT AT LPRGC

The following are the traditional Hunter/Trapper Educations courses taught at LPRGC. There is no fee to take the traditional course. These courses are for the most part taught by live instructors in a classroom like style, with some independent study. Students must be at least 11 years of age to take these courses.  The links for these courses can be found further down this page.

It’s also a good idea to work through the questions and answers found at the end of each chapter. They are a good representation of the questions that will be on the final exam. You can get them here.

INDEPENDENT STUDY HTE COURSES

Pennsylvania now offers a new style of Hunter/Trapper Education course, the Independent Study Course.  When taking this course, the student learns the material by taking an internet based course. The course takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete. It is only available to people age 16 and older. Younger students still need to attend a traditional course (see above).

Students can use any computer, smartphone, or tablet to take the course. The curriculum for the online course is identical to that taught in the traditional classroom course. Students move through the material a page at a time, making their way through 11 units. They must spend a certain amount of time on each page to make sure they’re not glossing over the material. There’s a quiz at the end of each unit, which must be passed before moving on to the next. A test covering all material in the course is completed at the end. After passing the test, a temporary certification card can be printed, and a license purchased immediately.

The online course is available through Kalkomey, a Texas-based company that specializes in hunter education. There is a fee, currently set at $19.50, for the online course, which is wholly retained by Kalkomey to offset their costs of providing the course. Remember, you do not need to pay a fee to take the traditional course (see above).

The course can be taken through Kalkomey’s website by clicking here
