Youth shooting sports play a key role in exposing young people to the traditions, safety practices, and competition that is part of the shooting community. LPRGC has very active junior rifle, trap, and archery programs, and many of our participants have been recognized at the local, state, and national levels.

The LPRGC board of directors approved the founding of a non-profit organization that would be committed to growing these programs. Thus, in the spring of 2019, the Lower Providence Rod & Gun Club Youth Shooting Sports Association (LPRGCYSSA) was incorporated.

The purpose of the LPRGC Youth Shooting Sports Association is to provide opportunities for youth from the township of Lower Providence and surrounding communities to learn firearms safety, develop recreational and competitive shooting skills, and create an appreciation for outdoor traditions and the 2nd Amendment. We stress firearms education and safety instruction as the foundation for all of our work.

Home Firearm Safety Program:

The Youth Shooting Sports Association, supported by the Rockland Foundation, provides no-cost NRA Home Firearm Safety classes to communities of color and at-risk populations with the goal of reducing firearm-related accidental deaths and injuries.

There is a new initiative in partnership with the Philadelphia chapter of the National African American Gun Association, and we look forward to their success in providing the classes in the Philadelphia area and in Delaware and Northeastern Maryland.

  • 2022 – created nine new instructors, held 33 classes for 240 students
  • One participant said, “I would have never taken an NRA class, except I saw two African-American women were the instructors.”

The completed pilot program in the Baltimore/Washington DC area was a fantastic success.  A report on the program is here.

  • 2019 – held 13 classes for 92 students, created 8 new instructors
  • 2020 – held 74 classes for 1,414 students (50% male, 42% female, and 8% youth students) for a total of 1,496 people trained before the COVID lockdowns.

DO YOU HAVE AN IRA? ARE YOU 70 1/2 YEARS OLD?

Are you at least 70 1/2 years old and have an IRA? Have you considered making a Qualified Charitable Distribution to the LPRGC Youth Shooting Sports Association?

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a distribution of funds from your IRA (other than a SEP or SIMPLE IRA) directly to a qualified charitable organization, such as the LPRGCYSSA. QCDs can be made by IRA owners who are age 70 1/2 or older. Because the gift goes directly to the charity without passing through your hands, the dollar amount of the gift may be excluded from your taxable income up to a maximum of $100,000 annually, with some exceptions. Please consult your tax advisor for information regarding your specific exceptions.
